How would you teach your own children about reading?

What I mean is: How would you try to awaken their interest in books that challenge them, or can teach them something? Or, more plainly: How can you convince teens that there is a world of literature beyond the current series, and that not every book assigned in school is necessarily the embodiment of evil?
Just to make it clearer: I am not referring to any specific child, I was just curious what your thoughts were :)
